Why can't I login?
To log in to Electricka’s Forums, you must register and activate your membership. Read about registration and activation in the section called How do I register? What is activation? How do I activate my membership? If you have trouble logging in, check the following:
  • You must activate your membership after you register. If you have not activated your membership within one month of registration, your registration will be deleted.
  • To log in after activation, you must supply the same username and password you supplied when you registered. (Be sure to remember what they are. You may want to write them down and store them in a safe place. If you have forgotten your password, see How can I recover a lost password?.)
  • To access the Forums, cookies and Javascript must be enabled on your browser. If you have registered and activated and are still unable to log in, be sure that cookies are enabled.
  • Unfortunately, to protect Forum users, it’s sometimes necessary to block a forum abuser from accessing Electricka’s Forums. If you think you have been banned by mistake, contact the forum moderator by email at Forums@Electricka.com or send the Moderator a Private Message. (See What is Private Messaging?.)

How do I register? What is activation? How do I activate my membership?
To use all the features of Electricka’s Forums, you must become a member. You become a member by registering and activating your membership. Here’s how:
  1. You register by logging in and filling out a simple form. To register, click the Register icon at the top of Electricka’s Forums page.
NOTE: To register, You can also click the Login button. When the Forum Login page opens, click the hyperlink at the bottom of the screen that reads, Click here if you are not a registered forum member.
  2. The Register New User page opens. Click the Accept button at the bottom of the screen and fill in the form on the next page that opens.
Important: Activation is the process by which Electricka confirms your email address. You must activate your membership before you can use Electricka’s Forums. You are not a member and cannot log in until you activate your membership.
Activation is simple and easy. When you register, you fill out a form called a Profile. You specify a username and password and other basic information such as your email address. How can I recover a lost password?
If you have lost your password, don't panic. Here’s what you can do:
  • Request a new automatically-generated password—To request a new password, click the text that reads Forgotten your password? on the Forum Login page. A Forgotten Password form will appear. Provide your correct username and your current Forums email address (as they exist in your Profile at the Forum) and click the button called Request New Password. A new password will automatically be generated and emailed to you at your Profile email address. Use the new password the next time you log in. You can change the new password when you log in if you desire.
  • Contact the forum moderator—The method for obtaining a new password (above) only works if:
    • You can provide your username and email address (as they exist in your Profile at the Forums).
    • You’re able to receive email at the email address in your Forums Profile.
The automatic method is preferred. If you can’t request an automatically-generated password because you can’t supply your username and password or can’t receive email at your Forums email address, contact the forum moderator by email and ask the Moderator to issue a new password and email it to you. Don't forget to include your username, current email address, and any other information that will identify you and your Profile. Contact the forum moderator at Forums@Electricka.com.

Can I set Forums times and dates to my local time?
Time of Day and Date reported by the Forums are taken from the Internet. As a result, Forums times and dates on topics, replies, and messages from Forums members may not agree with the times and dates that are correct for you.

If you like, you can normalize Forums times and dates so they agree with your own local times and dates by specifying a time offset. After you normalize, Forums will automatically adjust the times and dates you see on posts, replies, and messages from other members so they agree with your local times and dates. You can specify this offset on the Forums Preferences page. To reach the Forums Preferences page, click Forum Preferences on the Member Control Panel Menu. You can reach the Member Control Panel by clicking the Settings icon at the top of the Forums page.

NOTE: Electricka’s Forums will not automatically adjust for changes between standard time and daylight saving time. You must manually reset your time offset to account for these kinds of changes whenever they occur.

What does my rank indicate? What can I do based on my rank?
At Electricka’s Forums, all visitors have a rank. The term rank has nothing to do with class or social status. Ranks other than Administrator, Moderator, or Guest are determined strictly by the number of posts or replies a member has made in a forum. A member may be ranked high in one forum and low in another.
  • A guest is any visitor who is not a member of the Forums. Guests are only allowed to search, view topics and polls, view the Calendar, and view Help.
  • Except for guests, members in all ranks can post new topics or replies, edit or delete their own posts, send and receive private messages, look at the member list, and vote in polls. Check the lower right corner of your forum or topic screen for a list of things you are allowed to do in that forum.
  • In Electricka’s Forums, only administrators and moderators are allowed to create polls and calendar events and to post announcements and sticky topics. They can also modify member profiles or posts.

Can I change my rank?
Your rank in a forum is determined strictly by the number of posts or replies you make. Post more topics or replies in a forum and your rank there goes up. A member may be ranked high in one forum and low in another. Your rank is automatically recalculated whenever you post a topic or reply.

How do I add a signature to my post?
A signature is special text that’s added at the end (bottom) of a new topic post or reply. It can identify you as a person or serve any other purpose you desire. It can simply say Goodbye.

Don’t confuse this kind of signature with the handwritten signatures you see at the bottom of letters. It’s not a graphic image and it’s not rendered in a cursive script. However, it may contain a graphic image selected from a restricted set of images called Forum Codes. Forum Codes allow you to create a signature that has niceties such as smileys, URLs, email addresses, colored or italicized text, etc. (See What are Forum Codes?)

    NOTE:
    1. Your signature can be no greater than 200 characters.
    2. Forum Code characters count as part of your signature. They can easily consume much of the 200 character limit.
    3. You can have one forum signature at a time but you can change your signature at will.
Adding signatures at the bottom of topics or replies is a two-step process:
  1. Create your signature by entering the signature text in your Profile. You can reach your Profile by clicking the Settings icon at the top of a Forums screen and selecting Edit Profile when the Member Control Panel Menu, appears.
  2. At the Profile screen, you can choose to: 1) automatically append the signature you created to every posting you make or 2) append your signature at the time you post. If you take the second option, you can append your signature by checking the Signature box on the posting screen before you submit.

Can I use text editors when I create a posting or message?
Electricka’s Forums offers you two different kinds of text editors: 1) the Basic Editor and 2) the Rich Text Editor (RTE). You can use either of these editors to prepare topics or replies and to send messages. Both editors display the text you type while you enter it and both editors allow you to format (change the appearance of) text. Both editors have a Preview button which allows you to see how your posting or message will look when it’s read by other members.

Why two editors?

  • With the Basic Editor, you manually enter formatting effects by entering codes called Forum Codes that will be used later to format your text. You see the formatting codes and text on your screen. The future effects of the codes on the appearance of the text are not shown while you type. (See What are Forum Codes?)
  • With the RTE Editor, you enter formatting by selecting editor buttons, the way you do with some word processors. The editor does not show the codes on the screen; instead, it applies the codes as you type, making the text look the way it will look in its final form.
Partly because the RTE lets you see what you type without showing codes, it’s called a WYSIWYG editor. WYSIWG is an abbreviation of “What You See Is What You Get,” an acronym formed from the initial letters of this phrase.

Every Forums member is able to use the Basic Editor. The option to use the RTE Editor is limited to Forums members who use compatible browsers. Members who can use the RTE include those who browse with Internet Explorer 5 for Windows, Netscape 7.1, Mozilla 1.3 Plus, Mozilla Firebird 0.6.1 Plus, and more recent versions of these browsers. New browsers are introduced regularly, so the only way to be sure you can use the RTE Editor with your browser is to try it.

Each editor has its pros and cons. In general, the RTE Editor offers more functionality than the Basic Editor; the Basic Editor is more robust in certain situations.

NOTE: Most Forums members prefer the RTE over the Basic Editor because the RTE is a WYSIWYG editor and the Basic Editor is not. There’s an exception to this preference, however. If you use the RTE, there’s a small chance you may experience difficulties due to rare and unusual interactions between the RTE and the browser. If this applies to you, Electricka apologizes for the troubles you are having.
If you are one of the unfortunates who is experiencing an unacceptable interaction between the RTE and your browser, two remedies are open to you:
  1. Use the Basic Editor, which is simpler and therefore more dependable. To use the Basic Editor, at your Forums Profile page opt to turn off the WYSIWYG editor.
  2. Switch to another browser and try the RTE again. Usually, the best course of action in this kind of a situation is to upgrade your existing browser to its latest version.

Why can’t I spell-check the text I type in my Forums editor?
There are two editors you can use to type topics and messages in the Forums: 1) the Basic Editor, and 2) the Rich Text Editor (RTE). (For more information, see Can I use text editors when I create a posting or message?)

The Basic Editor does not provide an automatic spell checking feature.

The RTE does provide an automatic spell checking feature, but the feature must be initiated before it can be used. Here’s how:

As a new Forums member, the first time you click the spell-check button on the RTE screen—the button marked ABC—you will be invited to download a program called ieSpell. Before you can automatically spell-check the topics and messages you type in your text editor, you must download and install this program in your browser:

  • To install ieSpell, click the Spell button in the Forums editor and follow the directions that appear on the screen.
  • To automatically spell-check Forums text with ieSpell any time after installation, click the spell-check button in your Forums RTE editor.
ieSpell is an add-in to your browser that works with Internet Explorer 7 and other browsers based on IE7. Once ieSpell is installed in your browser, you can use it to spell-check any page you can view in your browser that accepts text, whether the page is at Electricka’s Forums, Electricka’s web site, or another web site. It can be useful in applications such as:
  • Text input boxes on forms, polls, etc.
  • Web email.
  • Blogs.
  • Diaries.
To spell-check from your browser:
  • Open the program from the menu that opens when you right-click your mouse, or
  • Open the program from the Tools menu.
What is a closed topic? What is a closed poll?
A topic or poll is closed if new replies are not allowed. A poll is closed if voting is no longer allowed. Only the forum moderator can close topics or polls.

Sticky Topics and Hot Topics
Sticky topics are topics that remain at the top of the topic list. They’re at the top of the list because they carry messages that are more permanent than other kinds of topics. Hot topics are topics to which Forums members are busy replying.

You cannot make a topic sticky or hot. Icons that represent sticky topics or hot topics are displayed to attract your attention.

Toggle email notification
You can ask the Forums to notify you when a discussion group member posts a new topic or replies to a topic. This is a handy way to keep track of what’s happening in any or all topics in your discussion group. If you have asked the Forums to notify you, each time someone posts a new topic or reply, the Forums automatically sends you your notification through your regular email service.

To use this feature, when you are editing a new topic or a reply, look for the text Toggle Email Notification for this Topic. If you want to be notified, click the text. A dialog box will appear that lets you know whether or not you are currently set to receive notifications. If you want to change your setting, click OK. If not, close the dialog box.

Once you set or reset the Toggle email notification, it will retain it’s setting until you toggle it again.

NOTE: If you want to receive email notifications, it’s a good idea make sure you have selected the option to receive email in your Forum Preferences. If you want to receive email, set this option to yes. If not, set this option to no.

Topic and Message Formatting
What are Forum Codes?
Forum Codes are special codes you can type into your text editor when you create a new topic, reply, or message. They allow you to format (change the appearance of) the text you type.

Forum Codes are similar to HTML codes in purpose, function, and vocabulary. In both HTML and Forum Codes you tell your editor how to display your text by tagging it. However, in Forum Codes the tag is indicated by square brackets—[ and ]—whereas in HTML the tag is indicated by angle brackets—< and >.

For example, suppose you are typing the word example and you want your text editor to display the word in bold, so that it appears in your message as example. To produce this effect in HTML, you would type the character string <b>example</b>; in Forum Codes, you would type the character string example. In either case, the result would be the same—example.

Your editor only interprets what you type as Forum Codes if you have enabled the Forum Codes feature. To enable or disable the Forum Codes feature, check the Enable/Disable Forum Codes check box while at your text processor. Click here to view Forum Codes that are available in the forums.

Can I use HTML in topics, replies, and messages?

What are Emoticons (Smilies or Smileys)?
Emoticons , also called smilies or smileys, are a group of graphical images designed to represent human feelings, emotions, opinions, or attitudes. Forums members have the option to insert them in the topics, replies, or messages they create.

Smilies appear on various screens. You might see one next to an original topic, a reply, in a private message, or in an email that includes topics and replies.

You’ll find a list of smilies near the bottom-left side of your editor screen. Click a smilie to insert it in the text you are typing.

Private Messaging
What is Private Messaging?
A message is a communication containing information, news, advice, request, comment, or the like. A private message is a particular kind of message, one sent between Forums members.

Think of a private message as a special kind of email message:

  • Any Forums member can send a private message to any other Forums member.
  • Any Forums member can receive a private message from any other Forums member.
Private messages are private because:
  • No one except a Forums member can see a private message.
  • No Forums member can see a private message you originate unless you add him to your address list.
  • No Forums member can send you a private message if you put him on your Buddy List and indicate that you don’t want to receive private messages from him.
For directions on how to prevent a specific Forums member from sending you private messages, see How can I prevent someone from sending me private messages?)

I cannot send private messages
To send a private message, you must be a registered Forums member and you must be logged in.

I cannot send private messages to some users
If you cannot send a private message to a specific addressee, it may be because:
  • You have exceeded the number of private messages you can send in the current hour.
  • The addressee has blocked you from sending.
  • The addressee’s Inbox is full.
The Forums will notify you when it can’t send a Private Message for any of these reasons.

How can I prevent someone from sending me private messages?
You can block unwanted private messages from a specific Forums member. Here’s how:
  1. Visit the Forums page called Private Messenger Buddy List page.
    1. Click the Private Messenger icon at the top of the Forums screen.
    2. When the Private Messenger page appears, click the Buddy List button.
  2. At the page called Private Messenger Buddy List page, check to see if the name of the Forums member you want to block is already on your Buddy List. If the name is already on your Buddy List and blocked, there’s nothing more to do. If the name is on your Buddy List and not blocked, delete the Buddy from your Buddy List.
  3. Add the name to your Buddy List and select the Cannot send me a message option from the dropdown list in the This member… column. The Forums member you add to your Buddy List will no longer be able to send you private messages.
Private Messaging vs. Regular Email
Private messages only travel between one Forums member and another; they never leave the Forums. You can only send a private message to another Forums member or receive a private message from another Forums member. Private messages do not appear on the Forum’s list of topics. Only Forums members you place on your private message’s address list will see your private message.

A private message travels on the internet between the sender and receiver but does not pass through your regular email service or email program. Therefore it’s faster and more secure.

Regular email is a separate feature that is not private messaging. Here’s how it works:

  • You can ask the Forums to notify you when a discussion group member posts a new topic or replies to a topic. This is a handy way to keep track of what’s happening in any or all topics in your discussion group. If you have asked the Forums to notify you, each time someone posts a new topic or reply, the Forums automatically sends you your notification through your regular email service.
  • This feature sends you notifications through your regular email service and your regular email program. Only you receive these email messages. That way, wherever you are you know when it’s time to visit the Forums again to keep up to date.

RSS Feeds
What is an RSS Feed?
RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication. The RSS feature works on newer browsers, RSS news readers installed on your computer, and email programs that have an RSS feature.

If you operate a program that supports the RSS feature, you can stay up to date on the latest Forums posts or Calendar Events without actually visiting the Forums. Here’s how:

While at the Forums, look for an icon bearing the acronym RSS; it appears near the top of some Forums pages.
    • When you see the RSS icon on a Forums page, click it. Thereafter, information from that Forums page will appear on your program’s list of RSS feeds.
    • Click the name of the Forums item on the RSS list in your program and the latest content from the Forums page will appear. Now you won’t have to visit the Forums to see the latest information from the Forums.

Electricka's Forums Glossary
Glossary
Forum
Originally, a forum was the marketplace or public square of an ancient Roman city. A forum was the center of business affairs and a place of assembly for the people. Today forums have changed their location and format, but their purpose remains the same. Today a forum is an assembly or meeting place for the discussion of questions of public interest, as in the expression, the forum of public opinion.

Electricka’s Forums
In Electricka’s Forums, a forum is a page at Electricka’s web site where visitors with a specific, common interest congregate to discuss a collection of topics related to that interest. There are numerous forums. Each forum contains or consists of one or more related discussion groups, each with a special subject interest that is different from all the others in that forum.

Electricka’s Forums is the congregation or assembly of all the different individual forums. It’s the place at Electricka’s web site where visitors meet to discuss topics of general interest. Subjects under discussion focus on and are limited to the arts embraced by Electricka’s Muses and to her web site.

Discussion
A discussion is a series of related postings about a single topic that is under discussion by a single discussion group. Each discussion consists of a new topic or of a new topic followed by one or more replies. Any member of Electricka’s Forums can introduce a new topic, reply to a topic, or reply to another reply.

Discussion Group
A discussion group is a group of visitors who share a specific, common interest and who are engaged in one or more discussions about that interest. Also, a discussion group is the name of group of related discussions currently under discussion by a single discussion group.

Any member of Electricka’s Forums is eligible to become a member of any discussion group. A Forums member automatically becomes a member of a discussion group when he posts a new topic or posts a reply to an existing topic.

Topic, New Topic
A topic is a specific subject under discussion by members of a discussion group; a subject of conversation or discussion; the subject or theme of a discourse. Also, a topic is a type of posting.

Any member of Electricka’s Forums can comment on (add to) any topic in a discussion by submitting a reply. Anyone who submits a reply automatically becomes a member of the discussion group in which the topic resides.

A new topic is a special kind of topic, the topic that introduces a subject for discussion in a forum for the first time. New topics are submitted to a discussion group by its members. Any member of Electricka’s Forums can post a new topic in any forum; anyone who posts a new topic automatically becomes a member of the discussion group where the new discussion is taking place.

Post, Posting
A post, also referred to as a posting, is a notice, bulletin, opinion, observation, comment, question, news item, or other piece of information brought to the attention of members of a discussion group in the form of a textual statement.

There are two types of posting: 1) new topics, and 2) replies.

Reply
A reply is a special kind of posting, one that is a response a member makes to a new topic or to a reply submitted by another forum member.

Poll
A poll is a sampling or collection of opinions on a subject taken for the purpose of analysis; it’s a place where votes are taken. Forum members are invited to take polls on various subjects, that is, to vote. Any Forums member can vote on any poll in any forum. Only the forum moderator can create a new poll.
