more about Sailors & SailingThe sea is a broad subject; it's impractical, nay impossible, for the resources contained in this feature to touch on all possible sea-related topics. But the scope of subjects permitted here is wide. It includes virtually any and all aspects of sailing and any kind of sailor or mariner plying any corner of his or her profession. Subjects are allowed to span the seven oceans, non-pelagic large bodies of water such as the Great Lakes, Caspian Sea, or Black Sea, and smaller lakes, rivers, and streams. Relevant vessels include boats and ships of all sizes, functions, technologies, and designs, from oil tankers to ore carriers to container ships to coastal freighters to motor yachts to clipper ships to tall ships to men-o'-war to LSTs to subs to aircraft carriers to cockle-shells to tugs to skiffs to bass boats. The information one might find in these resources is permitted to apply variously to any and all eras in which mankind has passed over or under the water on its way from nowhere in particular to somewhere else. It may comprehend the professional sailor who has adopted seafaring as a trade. It may comprehend equally the part-time pro or amateur (like the yacht racer). Also permitted are those who ply the sea but who are not themselves seamen, such as passengers, explorers and scientists (like Thor Heyerdahl and the Kon-Tiki), and those who are not primarily sailors but who take a living from the sea, such as fishermen or ferry boat crews who never leave a harbor. Even permitted when appropriate are the ship's cargo and land-based nautical paraphernalia such as docks, dry docks, and cranes. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
