Anonymous
ETAF sometimes uses the term anonymous to identify a visitor
who has submitted a ByLine Item, Arts Information Item, or voted, or to identify a visitor or contributor, whether a person or
agency, for any other reason.
Here's what anonymous means when ETAF uses it for the above
purposes:
- Having an unknown or unacknowledged name.
- Having an unknown or withheld authorship or agency.
- Having no distinctive character or recognition factor.
According to our sources, the word anonymous originates with
the late Latin anonymus, which is derived from from the Greek
word, anonumos, meaning nameless.
When ETAF lists a person's name or an agency as anonymous, it may
be for a reason that fits any of the above definitions. The person or
agency may have:
- No name.
- An unknown name.
- Given ETAF his name to ETAF and requested that his name be
withheld.
- Not given ETAF his name.
- No distinguishing characteristic by which to describe or assign
a name.
When we list a person or agency as anonymous, we make no statement about
which of the above reasons applies. The bottom line is simply that the
person or agency remains nameless.
