aids for Readers

The Muse Of Literature is pleased to offer visitors the reader's aids listed below. For instructions on how to get the most from this list, click the arrows below.

about these Aids

All the reader's aids cited in this list are available at Electricka's web site.

The nature of the aids available at Electricka's Resources For Readers varies greatly. Basically, there are two kinds of aids:

  1. Dictionaries, encyclopedias, tables, or other kinds of references that yield direct answers to a reader's or writer's direct questions. For example, the Table of Latinisms is an automated table of Latin terms with English translations that is located at Electricka's web site. Open the Table, type in a Latin or English keyword, and the translation appears.
  2. Facilities that help readers and writers identify and access sources of reading- or writing-related information and aids. For example, Electricka's Resource Shelf is an automated database that lists resources, references, reading aids, and a lot more. This database can help readers or writers identify reference materials and aids and then to access them:
    • Some of the reference materials and aids on the Shelf are located at bookstores, libraries, or similar facilities. A reader or writer must physically travel to these locations to obtain a specified aid.
    • Other reference materials and aids are located online at Electricka's web site or at other web sites. If an aid is located at an off-site location, the Shelf provides a link to it wherever possible.
    • When accessing online aids, a reader or writer can open pages at remote web sites or at Electricka's web site without leaving the Shelf. This feature allows the reader or writer to look for information the way a reference librarian does at a library and to work with resources as though they were reference books spread across a library reading room work table.
  3. Not all aids are aimed at helping both readers and writers. Some are for readers only; others are for writers only. The scope an aid is indicated in the column labeled Who For?

People First Name Equivalents Table

Access this table if you're reading a book, story, article, or web page about a person that's been translated into your native tongue from a foreign language. It may really help to know how to refer to the person in your native tongue.

For instance, those Russian names you read about in Tolstoy, Gogol, or Dostoevsky are particularly tricky to deal with. Stella in Russian is Estelle in English or French and Estrella or Estrellita in Spanish. Probably those name differences aren't so hard for you to handle. But what if you're faced with translating Natasha or Varina? What if you're facing Feodor or Fyodor?

This table lists over 200 male and female English language first names that have equivalent names in other languages. If there's more than one equivalent name for a given language, the additional equivalents are included and alternative spellings are accounted for.
