An Op-Ed page is a newspaper or magazine page devoted to signed articles by commentators, essayists, humorists, and others of varying viewpoints. Op-Ed stands for opposite editorial. An Op-Ed piece expresses a viewpoint opposite to the one expressed by an editor in an editorial. Hence the name.
