Summary

The Greek Alphabet is organized in the form of a table in which each letter is a symbol, with symbols that represent the capitals (uppercase or large letters) in the left column and the symbols that represent the lowercase (or small) letters in the right column. The name of the symbol, spelled in English, is in the right-most column.

Each row in the table represents a specific letter in the 24-letter Greek alphabet. Reading from left to right, a row contains an image of the capital letter, an image of the corresponding lowercase letter, and the name of the letter spelled in English, in that order.

Each symbol denotes a single vowel or consonant—a single sound in the Greek language. Pronounce (sound out) the English name of a letter in the table and expect to hear how the letter is pronounced in all but a few cases. For example, pi and tau sound just as you might expect; but xi is pronounced more like the letters zi. Chi is pronounced with a hard ch. And Psi is pronounced as if it were two syllables, with p almost silent. If you must be sure, your best bet is to consult a pronouncing dictionary or look online.

Mathematicians, physicists, chemists, biologists, earth scientists, and other scientists use these symbols everyday as part of their working vocabulary. Certain scholars consistently read ancient texts in Greek, especially religious writings and original Greek and Roman texts dating from about 550 BCE to about the 5th century CE.

You don't have to be a scientist or bible scholar, be Greek, or travel to Greece in order to interpret the Greek alphabet. Everyone runs across these symbols at one time or another. You'll run into them in ordinary reading, some kinds of school work, when travelling to certain parts of the world, in movies or television documentaries, in some older documents, on old coins, and in other situations and places.
